Life-size bronze statue installed at Double Bridge Square in the township
The Neyveli Lignite Corporation has paid a fitting tribute to Jambulinga Mudaliar, who was instrumental for the formation of the power company in this region, by installing his life-size bronze statue at the Double Bridge Square in the Neyveli Township.
Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the NLC B. Surender Mohan unveiled the statue installed at a cost of Rs. 9 lakh on Monday. The turbaned and bespectacled figure with fully buttoned up tunic with majestic disposition has been sculpted by Natarajan Sthapathi of Chennai.
Besides paying floral tributes to the statue, the Chairman also showered accolades on the munificence and public services rendered by Jambulinga Mudaliar. Mr. Surender Mohan said that at the time of assuming office as Chairman-cum-Managing Director he had given an assurance that he would make arrangement for the installation of the statue and it has now been fulfilled.
Already he had christened a main thoroughfare in the Neyveli Township after Jambulinga Mudaliar, a stalwart in the spheres of agriculture and education. He was a prominent citizen who occupied several important positions such as South Arcot Zilla Parishad Chairman, Chairman of the Cuddalore Municipality, member of the Academic Council of Annamalai University and a member of the Railway Board.
Jambulinga Mudaliar was born to Masilamandi Mudaliar and Sornambal on June 22, 1890 at Thirukandeswaram located on the Cuddalore — Panruti Road.
In appreciation of his services, the then British Government had conferred on him the Rao Bahadur title.
A landlord of great repute, Jambulinga Mudaliar owned several hundreds of fertile lands at Neyveli. When he was digging a well in his farm in 1934 a brownish black material gushed out along with water.
He duly informed the matter to the government which promptly responded by sending a mines engineer and a geologist to investigate the extent of mineral wealth. A detailed survey revealed that the place was rich in lignite reserves, a fossil fuel.
Later, on March 1953 a separate department was formed at the initiative of the then Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and mines engineer H.K. Ghosh with the mining capacity of 16,000 tonnes of lignite a year.
Later, it was undertaken by the Central Government and the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the mining operation in Neyveli on May 20, 1957.
Mr. Surender Mohan said that now the company had grown in stature to become a Navratna company. It was endowed with the mining capacity of 3.06 crore tonnes of lignite a year and power generation of 27 lakh units an hour.
On the occasion, the Chairman also honoured Jambulinga Mudaliar’s grandson Amaran, granddaughter Ranjitham and great-grandson Sriraman, who is residing at his ancestral home at Thirukandeswaram, and also sculptor Natarajan Sthapathi.
NLC Directors R. Kandasamy (Mines, Planning and Projects), J. Mahil Selvan (Power), Rakesh Kumar (Finance) and General Manager (Township Administration) K. Chakravarthi were present.
