{{{{{{{{ Police in Tamil Nadu say the TNRT has received weapons
training from the LTTE.
K.T. Sangameswaran reports.
IT WAS two years ago, when Veerappan had kidnapped the Kannada matinee
idol, Rajkumar, that the Tamil National Retrieval Troops (TNRT) made
headlines by tying up with him. Till then only the TNRT's parent
organisation, the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army, was widely known. The
Tamil Nadu police say both outfits have links with the LTTE.
The police suspect that when the ethnic strife in Sri Lanka was at its
peak, members of these groups were freely shuttling between the island
and Tamil Nadu. The police do not have an estimate about the number of
cadres the TNRT has, but consider it "more dangerous" than the TNLA,
whose leader Maran and five others were picked up by the Special Task
Force on the Veerappan trail. According to a senior police officer,
the TNRT consists of youth hailing mainly from Dindigul and Coimbatore
districts. Some of them went to Sri Lanka in mid-1990 and trained in
handling weapons under the LTTE. The TNRT's objectives include
"killing those who are opposed to LTTE in Tamil Nadu" and carrying on
activities in support of the Tigers in the State.
Both the TNLA and the TNRT believe in violence to achieve their aims,
the officer said. The half-a-dozen blasts allegedly caused by the TNLA
stand testimony to this. Starting with the blasting of the Marudayar
Bridge near Tiruchi in February 1987, the outfit exploded bombs at the
Kallagam railway station in 1992, and blew up TV towers at Dharmapuri
and Tuticorin in October 1995 and April 1999 respectively and the
railway track at Thiruppapuliyur in March 2000. It also attacked
police stations at Pudur in April 1991, Kullanchavadi in November 1993
and Andimadam in July 1997.
These outfits have a presence in Perambalur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur,
Chengalpattu-East, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruchi, Salem,
Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Chennai, Dharmapuri and Tuticorin districts.
Police say that after the ban on the group, TNLA cadres have started
operating under a new name, "Tamizhar Viduthalai Iyakkam".
